The Scalpel

Scraping my life away with your clumsy scalpel

You shaped my reality into something unrecognisable.

I could have been safe without you.

Shredded by your promises and my own failings

A life apart was inevitable, but

I’m still waiting for you to put the knife down

To let me go, so I can remember how to smile.

  1. I find writing this kind of poetry quite hard…it’s difficult to write in your own voice when it’s autobiographical… I find the process of the catharsis just overwhelms my craft…I’m working on one at the moment, but I’ve had to step outside of myself and treat it like they’re strangers that I’m observing even though it’s from something that happened more than 25 years ago…. and the only one I’ve ever managed to commit to paper came out of a teaching activity with young people in schools…. but you seem to be creating something out of it… not sure how to leave a trackback so here’s the link to my attempt… if that’s OK. http://anthropeloquence.com/2011/11/25/love-lies-bleeding/

  3. Ouch!
What pain you are feeling, and I think this is reflected in your avatar Cheryl.
I am hoping you are writing from a past memory.. but anyway it’s good to let it out:) And yes, it will fade with time. Blessings.

  4. Thank you for stopping by my blog. I wrote that blog post alittle out of character for what I write and I really appreciated that you saw something in it! I am looking through your blog. You are very talented. I am a follower now! Alesia

  5. Dear Cheryl, thank your for your attentions…
I had forgotten that you write poetry, although looking in now,
    I do remember Quicksand…

Laughter, that’s the surest hand, to keep us from despair.
    Happy New Year

  6. Hi Cheryl, can’t find anywhere else in such a busy blogspace (colour me jealous and don’t stop now!) to add a thank-you for finding time (while you are so busy creating spellbinding literature and skilfully distinctive artwork) to drp in to my beeseeker blog – much appreciated.

  7. The scalpel causes pain to improve a condition, but, in this piece, it’s definitely the opposite. Perhaps, it works both ways, so much like walls, which keep people either in or out.

  8. The scalpel inflicts pain to make a wound less painful when cured. But it works both ways, too, like walls, which keep people either in or out. Sadly, in this piece, it means more pain.

  9. G’day Cherylmoore,
